DOUGLASSVILLE, Pa. — Just when you think you've debunked a claim, you review the evidence and find stuff that completely blows your mind.
That's how the night went as JAM Paranormal investigated a residence in Douglassville on Oct. 13. The residence was originally part of the Underground Railroad in the 1800s.
Now it's just a house rented out to a family of three, who will remain anonymous to protect their privacy.
The investigation was conducted by myself, founder and lead investigator Jimmy Johnson, and co-founder Matt Boyer. During the investigation, I had a digital voice recorder, which I walked around with, an Extech EMF meter, my iBook, which was set up to record audio, and my Sony Mini-DVD camcorder. Boyer used his digital recorder, digital camera and a Panasonic digital camcorder.
On the first floor of the house, there is a kitchen, a room off the back of the kitchen, which leads into the living room. Off the living room is another small room where the slaves were reportedly hidden during the 1800s. There are three bedrooms upstairs, however, we restrained our investigation to the first floor and the small basement — the only entrance was from a door outside the house.
The reports from the family consisted of hearing banging sounds from the small room off the kitchen; seeing apparitions walking from that same room into the kitchen and through a wall; and having objects move from the living room to the small room where the slaves were kept.
We set up audio in both the small room of the kitchen and the room off the living room. We also had a camera set up in the room off the kitchen focused into the kitchen along the path of where the apparition had been seen walking. The other camera was set up in the living room.
JAM Paranormal began recording around 9 p.m., and Boyer, the homeowner's son, and I began investigating.
About 15 minutes into the investigation, I walked into the kitchen a watched my EMF meter go crazy. It was jumping from 1.5 to 5.0 all throughout the kitchen. Closer to the walls, it seemed to be stronger, and we immediately attempted to find the power source for we did not think it was paranormal.
But all of a sudden, it went dead. In every place that we were getting readings, it was now flat-lining. That's when we began to think something was going on, but a short time later, it re-appeared and that's when I notice that whenever the refrigerator turned on, something under the floor begins to emit a high dosage of EMFs throughout the kitchen.
Later on the drive home, Boyer and I discussed how the high EMFs were probably the reason why the homeowners thought they were seeing things, for high amounts of EMFs can cause a person to hallucinate and see things that aren't really there.
But, we continued our investigation because you never know.
Early in the night, before we discovered the high EMFs, we went to the basement outside. When leaving the basement, the homeowner's son closed and latched the door. As we walked away it opened by itself.
That was the only personal experience we had that night, and it wasn't caught on film, so in the long run, it really doesn't count toward our findings.
What do count are the several EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) we recorded.
At one point, while all three of us were outside, my iBook recorded the sound of a voice and shortly after it, you hear footsteps. We also recorded a voice saying, "Hey, Nana," "Protect us," "There," and "Caught you." They all sounded male, with the one who said, "There," sounding like a young boy.
We also had interaction with some of our questions. Also recorded on my iBook, I asked if they could make a sound. Right away, there's a tapping, scratching sound on wood. It was not heard at the time, but it's on the recording. Also, the homeowner's son was asking questions, and one of his questions was, "Do you wish to harm us?" He was more-the-less joking around because they have not experienced anything negative in nature, but after he asks the question, a voice says something that we cannot make out.
All in all, our findings were very interesting. We had about 4 1/2 hours of audio and 3 hours of video to review. We did not catch anything on video and the EMF meter was useless after we discovered how the refrigerator affects it.
The homeowner was impressed with our findings and wishes for us to return to see what else we can find. As of right now, JAM Paranormal believes that there is paranormal activity in the residence, however, we can not declare it to be haunted at this time. We plan to return in January 2008 to re-investigate the home.
